Henry De Cantelu sailed with Duke William
"The Conqueror". He was a ship captain in the invasion fleet and was
wounded near Duke William at the Battle of Hasting (The invasion of England by
the Normans) He was given an estate which he named Cantillo located on the
Dart River in Devonshire, England and he was given the motto Fortis in Bello
(invincible in war) by Duke William for his valor.
Some members of his family had earlier gone to Naples, Italy and established
the town Cantelupo ("Cry of the Wolf") and their family name became
Cantillo. The cantelope was named after that family. They went with William
Drogo, Tancrad De Hauteville when they went to Naples about 1030 A.D. The
family established a town named Cantelu in France, 5 miles downstream from
Rouen on the Seine River. There are charters dated 1030 with the name Cantelu.
The first descendents were vikings from Norway and Denmark, who came with
their chieftain Rollo when he invaded and conquered Northern France in 912
A.D. Rollo renamed this district Normandy. He held castles and estates in
Northern France circa 1066 at Chanteloup, Breaal, Canton, Lamanche Dist.
